Three female students from the Federal University Otuoke (FUO) in Bayelsa State have been arrested by Zone 16 of the Nigerian Police Force for allegedly assaulting and stripping a fellow student naked in a widely shared video.

The main suspect, identified as Kadi from the Social Work Department, was detained along with two others following orders from the Commissioner of Police Francis Idu.

The disturbing video, which surfaced on Facebook on Sunday, shows the suspects attacking a student named Nancy with slaps and punches before stripping her naked and cutting her hair braids with a sharp object.

The assault was reportedly triggered by Nancy’s alleged insult toward Kadi’s grandmother.

The footage has ignited public outrage and sparked debates about campus violence.

With assistance from FUO’s security team, Zone 16 operatives arrested the suspects on Monday.

In a phone conversation recorded and shared online, Kadi confirmed she was being taken to the university authorities before transfer to Zone 16 headquarters in Yenagoa.

Addressing rumours, she clarified that the incident was unrelated to her ex-boyfriend, known as “Upcoming,” with whom she ended contact a month ago. “Someone insulted my grandmother, saying she smells, and you expect me not to react?” Kadi said in the recording.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from advocacy groups.

In a statement issued Monday, the Association of Women Against Gender-Based Violence (AWAGBV) and Do Foundation condemned the “shocking display of violence” by the suspects.

AWAGBV President Dr. Dise Harry described the act as “deeply embarrassing” and called for a comprehensive investigation into what she termed a case of assault, bodily harm, and cybercrime.

“Young women should uphold dignity and responsibility, not engage in such shameful acts,” Harry stated.

As the investigation continues, the arrests have highlighted growing concerns about gender-based violence and student conduct in Nigerian universities.

Police have yet to confirm formal charges as the investigation continues.
