Police arraign woman, 24, for allegedly assaulting police officer

The police on Tuesday arraigned a 24-year-old woman, Agbo Rita, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

The defendant of no fixed address is standing trial on a three-count charge of assault, unlawful resistance and unlawful publication of statement.

The prosecuting counsel, Mr Martins Akala, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Sept 28 in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant unlawfully assaulted and willfully obstructed ASP Olaniyan Olusegun and his team while performing their lawful duty along Iworoko road in Ado-Ekiti.

Oriyomi also alleged that the defendant did resist lawful arrest by the police officer and his team.

He said that the defendant unlawfully published harmful and injurious statements against the members of the Nigeria Police Force to malign the good image of the force and cause fear and alarm to the public, which she knew to be false.

According to him, the offence contravened Section 187(c) and punishable under Section 187(f), Section 187(a) and Punishable under Section 187(f) and Section 39 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against her.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N150,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case till Nov.7 for hearing.
