The Plateau Elders Forum has expressed its deepest shock by the breach of peace experienced in parts of Plateau State, particularly following the reported outbreak of violence and skirmishes along Rukuba Road in Jos, the state capital, on Saturday, 14 August 2021, where some people attacked a convoy of commuters said to be travelling to Ikare, Ondo State, resulting in the loss of 23 lives and serious injuries to several others.

In a statement by the Publicity Secretary, Gideon Mitu, the Plateau Elders Forum deeply sympathised with the families of those who lost their lives in this avoidable tragedy as well as the Ondo State government and prayed for the quick recovery or the injured victims receiving treatment in various hospitals.

The forum strongly condemned any acts of violence, destruction of lives and properties at the slightest provocation and suspicion, however, “it should be noted that the people of Plateau Stale have long been known to be peaceful, humane and very hospitable, while the state has been tagged the ‘Home of Peace and Tourism. Plateau people believe in oneness, respect and value for human life. We hope that this unfortunate tragedy should not give the state and its citizens a bad image or lead to reprisal attacks.”

The Plateau Elders Forum urged the security agencies to always be proactive in the discharge of its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and properties so as to give all citizens a sense of belonging and commonality.
