The Baptist Conference in Plateau State has appealed to the administration of President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of Governor Caleb Mutfwang to take decisive actions to address the persistent attacks and loss of lives in the state.
Reverend Koeleh Saleh, President of the Plateau Baptist Conference, disclosed during the 47th Annual Conference in Jos that the church had tragically lost over 62 members, including pastors and their children, to violence in various communities within Mangu and Bokkos Local Government Areas over the past eight months.
Addressing a gathering of dignitaries, including Governor Mutfwang, Saleh recounted the relentless assaults on Baptist churches and their members.
He highlighted the devastating toll of the attacks, citing specific instances such as the massacre of 33 church members in Mangu LGA on May 15 and 16, 2023, along with additional casualties due to displacement and subsequent hardships.
Saleh also recounted the harrowing attack on Hirpia Christian community in Bokkos LGA, where five church members, including the wife and children of Reverend Emmanuel Makama, were brutally murdered.
Saleh emphasized the profound impact of the violence, not only in terms of lives lost and injuries sustained but also the widespread destruction and economic upheaval inflicted upon affected communities.
He lamented the impunity with which assailants continued to operate, freely grazing in deserted areas without repercussions.
Governor Mutfwang acknowledged the gravity of the security challenges faced by the state, praising the Baptist church for its efforts in promoting peace amid the relentless onslaughts.
In light of escalating insecurity nationwide, Reverend Saleh implored President Tinubu and the Plateau State Government for immediate interventions to safeguard life and property.
The conference serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for concerted action to stem the tide of violence and restore stability to Plateau State.
