António Guterres, secretary general of the United Nations (UN), has received and accredited Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s permanent representative to the multilateral body.

Ibrahim presented his letter of credence on Monday, marking the beginning of his posting.

According to a statement issued by Temitope Ajayi, senior special assistant to President Bola Tinubu on media and publicity, Ibrahim assured the UN and the global community that Tinubu would resolve generational problems confronting Nigeria.

Ibrahim also sought the support and cooperation of the international community.

Ibrahim’s posting was met with stiff criticism from some civil society organisations (CSOs) over alleged graft litigation.

The CSOs petitioned Tinubu and Guterres to review the former senator’s ambassadorial posting, saying his nomination as Nigeria’s permanent representative to the UN was a matter of “significant national and international consequence”.
