The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, to promptly present himself before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding the unresolved matter concerning the misappropriation of N108 billion belonging to the people of Akwa Ibom State during his tenure as Governor.

In a formal statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the opposition party further insisted on the immediate withdrawal of Senator Akpabio from his official duties to facilitate an impartial inquiry into the allegations of inserting a staggering N3.7 trillion into the 2024 budget for purportedly fictitious projects.

Additionally, the PDP called on Senator Akpabio to address the reported N86 billion contract irregularities within the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) during his tenure as the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.

The PDP vehemently condemned the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi by the leadership of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) in the Senate without a comprehensive investigation into the matter of budget manipulation that he raised.

“This suspension appears to be a tactical maneuver to impede scrutiny and obscure the truth.

“Furthermore, the reluctance of the APC Senate leadership to engage in a transparent inquiry through the appropriate Senate Standing Committee raises suspicions regarding their motives and raises questions about their commitment to accountability.

“It is disconcerting that the Senate President presided over this matter, potentially tarnishing the integrity of the Senate.

“The allegations of misconduct and breach of public trust demand thorough scrutiny and adherence to legal procedures.

“The PDP underscores the urgency for Senator Akpabio to step aside, allowing an independent investigation into the budget manipulation allegations and to address the accusations of misappropriation during his tenures as Governor and Minister.

“The party stands in solidarity with Senator Ningi for his advocacy for accountability and transparency in governance.

“At this critical juncture, Nigerians anticipate a demonstration of integrity and accountability from the Senate President, which entails cooperation with investigations and clearing his name of any wrongdoing,” the PDP said.
