● Vows Party comeback
A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Humphrey Abah, has described the recently passed Electoral Act by the National Assembly of Nigeria and assented to by the President of Nigeria as a “booby trap” designed to give the ruling party an undue advantage over other political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abah expressed serious concern over what he called dangerous provisions embedded in the new law, warning that such measures could undermine Nigeria’s democratic process and create an uneven playing field in the political arena.
According to him, it is harmful to the nation’s polity for the party in power to manipulate electoral regulations in a way that places other political parties at a clear disadvantage.
One of the provisions he described as a “booby trap” is the introduction of a compulsory electronic registration (e-registration) exercise for political parties. Under the new requirement, all political parties are expected to complete their registration electronically within a very short period.
Abah argued that while the ruling party had already commenced the process about a month earlier, other parties were given less than two weeks to comply with the directive.
He alleged that the delay by the National Assembly in passing the Electoral Act until this late stage was a deliberate strategy aimed at frustrating opposition parties.
According to him, the timing makes it practically impossible for many parties to meet the deadline, thereby giving the ruling party a significant edge over its competitors.
Abah also criticised the National Assembly for what he described as its failure to address the issue of forged academic certificates among political office seekers.
He argued that allowing candidates with questionable credentials to contest elections without proper scrutiny—both before and after elections—amounts to a major disservice to the Nigerian people and an affront to democratic accountability.
“There is no doubt,” Abah said, “that the ruling party has perfected several strategies aimed at skewing victory in its favour by frustrating other parties and limiting their ability to participate effectively in the 2027 general elections.”
Despite these concerns, Abah maintained that the PDP remains a formidable political force and the party to beat in the next election cycle.
He claimed that many of the alleged schemes against the party were designed to weaken its traditional strongholds and diminish its influence across the country.
However, he expressed confidence that the PDP would overcome these challenges.
“Regardless of the plots against us, we are bouncing back stronger,” he assured.
“The People’s Democratic Party will certainly be on the ballot in 2027.”
Speaking on a recent judgement by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria, Abah stated that the party would challenge the ruling through appropriate legal channels.
He insisted that no amount of political pressure or collaboration among opponents would prevent the PDP from participating in the 2027 general elections.
Abah further disclosed that the party’s leadership, particularly the National Executive Committee of the People’s Democratic Party, is already putting strategies in place to strengthen the party and prepare for the political contests ahead.
According to him, the ruling party is uneasy about the PDP’s capacity to reorganise and regain political strength.
“They are jittery because they know what the PDP represents and what it is capable of achieving,” he said. “That is why they are placing stumbling blocks along the way. But we will overcome them.”
