Sunday Ogbogho, a pastor with one of the popular Pentecostal churches in Asaba, Delta state, has been arraigned in a magistrate court for allegedly assaulting his tenant, Mr Kenneth Orusi.
Reports said that on July 27, 2025, Mr Ogbogho who is also a landlord allegedly attacked Mr Orusi who is a journalist and inflicted injuries on his head with a hard object, in his residence at No. 5 Ediale Street, off Ibusa Road, Asaba.
In a charge, in file no. 367 at the Magistrate Court 4, Asaba, the police prosecutor accused Ogbogho of committing an offence punishable under Section 355 of the Criminal Code but Ogbogho pleaded not guilty.
The defence counsel informed the court that the defendant was a landlord in Asaba and presented a surety
The court granted Ogbogho bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety who must be a civil servant of not less than Grade Level 12, present valid identification, appointment and promotion letters, a current payslip, and sworn affidavit, as well as undergo residence verification by court and police officers.
However, the magistrate expressed caution over surety from certain government agencies, noting that officials “who work in the field” were often difficult to trace when defendants abscond.
“When you take someone on bail, you are telling the court you will ensure he attends trial until the case is disposed of,” the Magistrate warned. “We have had cases where surety vanished when defendants jump bail.” she said.
The Magistrate issued a stern reminder that “justice is not for sale”, warning against offering money to court staff members, lawyers, or anyone claiming influence over the bench and adjourned to August 25, 2025 for hearing.
