Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has disclosed that God once gave him a stern warning that his firstborn would die if he ever chose to leave the church.
He made this disclosure during the June Holy Ghost Service, themed “Destined for Greatness (Part 2),” which held in the early hours of Saturday, June 7, at the Redemption City of God in Ogun State.
Addressing the congregation, Adeboye stressed the importance of divine direction and spiritual stability, referencing a recent sermon by his son, Pastor Leke Adeboye, where similar concerns were raised about Christians constantly moving from one church to another.
He expressed concerns that many young believers today frequently change churches, presenting themselves as newcomers in each one. Adeboye shared his personal experience from the time he became born again, noting that despite the appeal of three major ministries that were thriving at the time, God specifically instructed him to stay in RCCG.
“When I got born again, there were three major ministries that were making waves, and they were very good. There were different temptations to go from one to another,” he recounted.
“But God said to me, ‘Son, I brought you here. This is where you will stay. The day you leave this denomination, your firstborn will die,’” Adeboye disclosed.
He described how the RCCG was a relatively obscure ministry at the time, with its headquarters located in a modest building in Ebute-Metta, Lagos. Despite being a university lecturer, he said God instructed him to submit to a spiritual leader who lacked formal education.
“I was a lecturer at the university. My father in the Lord didn’t go to secondary school, not even primary. But God said this is where you will stay,” he said.
Encouraging the congregation, particularly the youth, Adeboye advised them to prayerfully discover where God wants them to be and remain faithful there.
“Discover where God wants you to stay, and stay there,” he urged.
He, however, clarified that his message was not intended to suggest that RCCG is superior to other churches.
“I am not saying we are better than any other denomination,” Adeboye said.
