Panic has gripped United Bank for Africa (UBA) customers following a shocking incident where a customer’s account was allegedly drained of over N100 million after a fake death claim was made.
Ibhahe Hope Ehieribo, a returnee who recently came back to Nigeria after years of working abroad, claims that his life savings were siphoned from his UBA account without his knowledge or consent.
According to Ehieribo, the incident occurred in 2023 while he was still residing overseas.
He had been saving consistently into his UBA account, making deposits multiple times each year.
However, upon his return to Nigeria, he was stunned to learn from bank officials that his entire savings had been withdrawn.
The funds, he was told, had been accessed by individuals who claimed he had passed away and was already buried.
The situation escalated when Ehieribo visited the bank to demand clarification, only to find police officers waiting to arrest him for allegedly causing a disturbance.
Ehieribo insists that he merely raised his voice in shock and frustration after learning that his life savings had vanished.
Human rights advocate Gwamnishu Harrison has taken up Ehieribo’s case, describing the development as a clear violation of the customer’s rights.
Harrison has vowed to take legal action against UBA and has urged the bank to take responsibility for the loss.
“The bank will be held liable. They know what happened,” Harrison said.
UBA has yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
However, Harrison disclosed that the bank’s headquarters reached out to him and assured that they were investigating the matter.
The beneficiaries of the withdrawn funds, Patience and Precious, are reportedly unknown to Ehieribo, and the bank officials mentioned their names in connection with the transaction.
The incident has raised concerns about the security of customers’ funds in UBA, with some customers contemplating closing their accounts.
Harrison has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to intervene and ensure that UBA takes responsibility for the loss.
