Staff members of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), 42, Oyin Jolayemi St, Victoria Island, Lagos State are operating in fear due to COVID-19 infection that has spread in the branch.

Sundry media reports said that not less than 14 members of the GTBank branch had been confirmed positive.

A staff member had, according to reports, died of COVID-19 related complications.

But sources claimed the deceased died of asthma attack.

The management of the bank, amid fear of the virus spreading than it already had, directed all the confirmed cases of its workers to work from home.

Report by Gatekeepers News said that top officials who still had to report to the office as operations in the branch continued were in fear.

The fast-spreading virus, which signals the third wave in the country, comes after the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed the first case of the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant.

Since then, the nation’s COVID-19 issues have recently been on the increase.

The variant was detected in a traveller to Nigeria, following the routine travel test required of all international travellers and genomic sequencing at the NCDC National Reference Laboratory, Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The Delta variant is recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a variant of concern, given its increased transmissibility.

The variant has been detected in over 90 countries and is expected to spread to more countries.

NCDC explained that the variant has also been linked to a surge in cases in countries where it is the dominant strain in circulation.

Lagos, being the epicentre of the virus, has been putting some measures in place to prevent the spread of the Delta variant.

On July 14, the University of Lagos shut all its hostels over the fear of COVID-19. It announced that lectures for the rest of the semester would be delivered virtually with effect from July 26, 2021.

Also, in some parts of the country, many activities have been put on hold, and festivals have been suspended.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 (PSC) has placed Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Kaduna, Kano, Plateau and the FCT on red alert due to the rising number of infections. (Gatekeepers News)
