Retired Commissioner of Police Fatai Ajani Owoseni has stepped down as Special Adviser on Security to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and as Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund, a move widely linked to plans to contest the 2027 governorship race.
Owoseni, who previously headed the police commands in Lagos and Benue, submitted his resignation in a letter dated May 7, 2026, addressed to the governor through the Chief of Staff. The resignation takes immediate effect.
In the letter titled “Letter of Resignation. RE: CP Fatai Owoseni, Retd,” Owoseni thanked Makinde for the opportunity to serve the state in both roles.
“I present my greetings and wish to humbly inform Your Excellency of my decision to resign my appointments as the Special Adviser on Security and the Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund,” he wrote.
He noted that his position represented Oyo State at the Forum of National and Subnational Security Officials in the Office of the National Security Adviser, as well as on the board of the Oyo State Security Network, Amotekun, and urged that a replacement be appointed promptly.
Owoseni also attached the list of OYSSTF bank accounts under his signatory and said he remained available to process changes to account mandates and to offer professional insight on security matters related to his stewardship.
– Eye on 2027-
The resignation is seen as a precursor to Owoseni’s expected entry into the 2027 Oyo governorship contest. Sources close to him indicate he may announce his new political platform within days.
Owoseni closed the letter by expressing gratitude to the governor and wishing him good health and divine guidance to advance Oyo State’s development.
