Former Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Rowland Owie, KSJI, has commended the Senate for overwhelmingly rejecting the Bill seeking to amend certain sections of the newly-minted Electoral Act.
Reacting to reports that the Bill failed to scale through the second reading, the ex-Whip stated that his colleagues “have displayed uncommon courage in the face of intimidation, mind games and manipulative proclivities of a certain section of the ruling class.”
“I commend my colleagues at the Red Chambers for collectively standing to be counted by roundly resisting attempts by certain persons to continually tele-guide our budding electoral process.
“By clinically terminating the Bill on the floor before it got to the Committee stage, my distinguished colleagues deftly ensured that the agents of darkness would not have any opportunity to desecrate our collective patrimony.
“With the Bill now effectively consigned to the ignominious dustbin of history, it is our hope that members of the National Assembly and INEC would resist further attempts to short-circuit our electoral process,” the former Chief Whip declared.
