Grief has gripped the Federal University of Technology, Akure, after 100-level Surveying and Geoinformatics student Favour Olaniyi was found dead near his off-campus residence on Saturday.
The university confirmed the tragedy in a statement Sunday, saying the young student’s body was discovered close to his apartment.
“After the incident was brought to the attention of the university management, the university security apparatus immediately informed the police,” said FUTA’s Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Adegbenro Adebanjo.
Police and university medical officials rushed to the scene and moved the body to the morgue. Olaniyi’s parents have been informed, and FUTA said it is fully cooperating with police as investigations continue.
The loss has left fellow students shaken. University officials said counselling support is being provided to those affected.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents and family members at this very difficult time,” Adebanjo said.
He added that FUTA’s Students Affairs Division remains open to students battling personal struggles, urging them to seek counselling and support both on and off campus.
The university did not disclose the cause of death, saying it awaits the outcome of the police investigation.
