Osun State Governor’s wife, Mrs Kafayat Oyetola, has called upon all relevant stakeholders in the state and Nigeria at large to join hands with the government to curtail the menace of violence against citizens through the proper implementation of the Violence Against Person Prohibition law (VAPP).
Mrs Oyetola, who also doubles as the President Ilerioluwa Development Initiative, made the call during a Town Hall Meeting with stakeholders in Osun State on how to step up the campaign among the citizens of the state.
Speaking further at he meeting, which was organised with the support of a development partner , Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), Mrs Oyetola revealed that the 16 days of activitism against Gender- Based Violence is an annual international campaign which kicked off on the 25th of November to the 10th of December with the aim of eradicating the ugly trend and to ensure that normalcy reigns supreme in the country.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Speaker Osun State House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye appreciated the office of the First Lady and Westminster Foundation for their efforts at making the law known to all and sundry in the society, noting it is the right step in the right direction, which according to him, is complementary to the state Assembly’s effort that passed the bill into law to nip the anomaly in the bud.
He added further that the law is a guide which gives all citizens the direction on how to behave responsibly wherever they find themselves in life.
In their separate reactions during the meeting, Mrs Veronica Onoja and Mrs Folasade Adekanmi opined that the only way to eradicate the menace in our society is by totally implementing the various penalties in the law on any perpetrator of the act without any act of pity or bias.
Speaking earlier, the representative of Westminster Foundation for Democracy, Mrs. Sola Folayan, also commended Osun First Lady for taking the bold step.
Mrs Folayan noted that it will go a long way in finding lasting solutions to all related issues of violence against any citizen of Osun and Nigeria at large.
