Security operatives at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) repelled an attempted attack on the institute late Wednesday, killing one suspected assailant during a gun battle.
The incident occurred about 11:00 p.m. when gunmen tried to gain access to the facility, NIPSS said on Thursday.

In a statement, Dr. Osime Samuel, Head of Public Affairs at NIPSS, said the attackers engaged security personnel in a gunfight but were forced to withdraw following a “swift and coordinated response.”
“One of the suspected assailants was killed during the encounter, while others fled the scene,” the statement read.
The institute said the attackers failed to breach its security perimeter.
All participants of the Senior Executive Course, staff, residents, and facilities were reported safe.
“NIPSS wishes to reassure participants, staff, residents and the general public that the security of lives and property within the institute remains our highest priority,” Dr. Samuel said.

NIPSS said security agencies have intensified efforts to apprehend those behind the attack, while surveillance and other measures have been strengthened around the facility.
The institute commended the “prompt response and professionalism” of security personnel and urged the public to disregard “unverified reports capable of causing unnecessary panic.”
The attack comes weeks after another reported attempt by armed men to access the institute’s premises.

ONE SUSPECT KILLED AS SECURITY OPERATIVES FOIL ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO BREACH NIPSS SECURITY PERIMETER
The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, wishes to inform the public that another attempt by unidentified armed assailants to breach the Institute’s security perimeter was successfully repelled by security personnel late yesterday night, Wednesday, 1 July 2026.
The attackers engaged security operatives in a gun duel but were forced to retreat following the swift and coordinated response of the security forces. One of the assailants was neutralised during the encounter, while others were reported to have escaped with varying degrees of injuries.
The Institute is pleased to report that there was no breach of the security perimeter. All participants, staff, residents and Institute facilities remain safe and secure.
Security agencies have intensified efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects, while surveillance and other proactive security measures have been further strengthened within and around the Institute.
