One feared dead, many reportedly injured as police, shiites clash in Abuja

At least one person was feared dead and many others injured on Tuesday as policemen and members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as Shiites, engafed in a bloody confrontation in Abuja.

The incident reportedly happened at the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory near the National Human Rights Commission, where the Shiites had embarked on their usual protest march, calling for the release of their leader, Ibrahim Elzakzay and his wife, Zeenat.

The police were said to have fired shots and teargas canisters to disperse the Shiites and in the process, one of them was said to have been hit by a bullet.

President of Academic Forum of IMN, Abdullahi Mohammed, told journalists that many people were injured during the incident.
