In his recent article, “A Show of Shame: When Pettiness Undermines State Dignity,” Wale Obanigba wrote that “the 50th anniversary of Ondo State ought to have been a unifying moment, a celebration of history, shared sacrifice, and collective progress.” While that sentiment is widely shared by the people of Ondo State, his attempt to portray the anniversary celebration as a failure is largely built on speculation, selective interpretation of events, and political sensationalism rather than objective evaluation.
The 50th anniversary of Ondo State was a landmark moment designed to celebrate five decades of resilience, cultural heritage, institutional growth, and socio-economic development. While public discourse is healthy in a democracy, it is important that such discourse remains grounded in verifiable facts, context, and fairness.
First, the claim that the Ondo State Government deliberately disrespected the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, by allegedly failing to receive him at the airport is speculative and misleading. Large state events of this magnitude typically involve layered coordination between federal protocol units, security agencies, and state representatives. It is inaccurate and unfair to reduce complex logistical arrangements into an assumption of intentional discourtesy. The Minister attended the event, participated fully in the celebrations, and there has been no official communication suggesting that he was treated with disrespect. Governance should not be judged on rumours or unofficial interpretations.
Secondly, the attempt to politicise the absence of the family of the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, is both unfortunate and insensitive. The relationship between the Ondo State Government, the party and the Akeredolu family remains a matter of private respect and institutional acknowledgement, not political theatre. The late Governor Akeredolu remains a respected figure in the history of Ondo State, and his contributions to governance, security architecture, and infrastructural development remain indelible. The Ondo State Government has never denied his legacy, nor has it demonstrated any policy or official conduct aimed at diminishing his memory.

It is also important to emphasise that constitutional democracy does not operate on personal loyalties but on institutional continuity. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa did not assume office by political conspiracy or personal ambition. He became governor through the clear and lawful provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. Attempting to frame constitutional succession as a moral debt undermines democratic governance and weakens the institutional structures that sustain stability.
Furthermore, the Ondo @50 celebration was widely acknowledged as a successful commemoration that showcased the state’s cultural richness, economic prospects, tourism potential, and developmental achievements. The event attracted dignitaries from across the country and beyond, reflecting the growing national relevance of Ondo State. It created opportunities to reflect on achievements in education, healthcare expansion, infrastructural renewal, agricultural innovation, and investment attraction initiatives currently being pursued by the Aiyedatiwa administration.
Leadership must be evaluated by measurable performance indicators rather than political sentiment. Since assuming office, Governor Aiyedatiwa has prioritised continuity in governance, accelerated infrastructure delivery, strengthened security collaborations, and maintained administrative stability within the state. These are tangible markers of responsible leadership, not the narrative of division being promoted by critics.
Ondo State at 50 represents a shared heritage that transcends political affiliations and individual personalities. The golden jubilee was not designed to elevate any individual but to celebrate collective progress and inspire future development. Attempts to rewrite the narrative of the celebration through the lens of political grievance only distract from the genuine achievements and unity demonstrated during the historic occasion.
As Ondo State moves into its next phase of development, what is required is constructive engagement, responsible criticism, and collective support for policies that improve the welfare of citizens. Political discourse should strengthen democratic values, not distort public perception through assumptions.
The Ondo @50 celebration succeeded in reminding citizens of the state’s journey, honouring its pioneers, and reinforcing optimism about its future. That legacy should be preserved through truth, fairness, and a commitment to progress rather than divisive rhetoric.
