In a bold move to combat food insecurity and revitalize Edo State’s economy, Governor Monday Okpebholo has earmarked over N70 billion for agriculture in the 2025 budget, themed “Renewed Hope for a Rising Edo.”
The budget, which totals N675 billion, reflects the administration’s focus on food production, agricultural revolution, and infrastructure development.
According to his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, speaking at the budget signing, Governor Okpebholo emphasized the urgency of tackling food shortages and achieving food sufficiency in Edo State, and positioning agriculture as a cornerstone of his administration’s development agenda.
Presenting the finalized budget, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku highlighted the Legislature’s commitment to addressing food insecurity.
The upward revision of the budget from N605 billion to N675 billion was driven by the need to strengthen the agricultural sector.
“The House carefully reviewed the budget and agreed to significantly increase funding for agriculture, ensuring food sufficiency for Edo State,” Hon. Agbebaku stated.
The 2025 budget also aligns with Governor Okpebholo’s plans to launch large-scale mechanized farming across the state’s three senatorial districts in early 2025.
This initiative is expected to not only meet local food demands but also enable Edo State to export agricultural produce to neighbouring states.
With this robust investment in agriculture, the administration is taking a decisive step toward transforming Edo into a food-secure and economically vibrant state.
