Delta State Governor Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa said the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) nationwide was a major victory for the right to free movement and association.

Okowa stated this while reacting to the announcement by Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu on Sunday, dissolving the special police squad.

He said Nigerian youth could take pride in the fact that they had won a major victory for the right to free movement and association.

“Today, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, announced the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) nationwide. This disbandment is in response to the #EndSARS protests, which became a national and an international movement.

“The Nigerian youth can take pride in the fact that they have won a major victory for the right to free movement and association,” Okowa said.

While commending the Police for their restraint during these protests, the Governor said the disbandment of SARS was a visible demonstration of how government agencies should respond to the grievances of people and their agitations for justice and good governance in a democracy.

He called on the IGP not to stop at disbanding SARS, as it was the first in the many steps that were required to carry out a comprehensive reform of the Nigerian Police Force.

Okowa said such a reform should cover all matters that were related to recruitment, training and welfare of the rank and file.
