Kenneth Okonkwo has described former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as a “conman” and leader of some of Nigeria’s “most toxic political followers.”

The former Labour Party spokesperson and ADC chieftain made the remarks Thursday on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” while discussing recent defections from the ADC-led opposition coalition.

Okonkwo said Obi’s exit, along with Rabiu Kwankwaso’s, removes significant voter strength from the bloc.

He estimated the two account for about 8 million votes based on the last election results.

“Peter Obi exiting… that’s almost a 2 million votes on face value that is gone. Peter Obi almost 7 million votes as of the last count that is gone,” he said.

Despite the exits, Okonkwo insisted the ADC-led coalition remains the central platform for the opposition ahead of 2027.

He warned that any opposition figure who walks away is effectively working for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.

“If the opposition cannot come together to act as one, they should as well go and endorse Tinubu,” he said.

Okonkwo argued that unity is critical for the opposition to mount a credible challenge in 2027, even as realignments continue within the ranks.
