Former Minister of Finance and Nigeria’s candidate for the position of Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Monday launched into a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Aso Rock.
She was led to the meeting with the President by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo; Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Zubair Dada; and the Minister of State, Industry Trade and Investment, Maryam Katagun.
Okonjo-Iweala, 66, has a 25- year old career behind her as a development economist at the World Bank.
She had eventually become the bank’s number two.
She is the chair of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and also a board member at Twitter board of directors, Standard Chartered Bank, and African Risk Capacity; co-chair of the Global Commission for the Economy and Climate; member Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) international advisory board; International Monetary Fund external advisory board, African Union special envoy and is a special envoy for the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 fight.
The former minister of finance was announced as one of the two candidates in homestretch of the WTO election alongside Yoo Myung-hee, the South Korean candidate, on October 7.
If she wins the election, Okonjo-Iweala will be the first African and first female to lead the WTO in its 25 years of existence.
