The controversy surrounding the removal of Benjamin Ikani as the Clan Head of South-East Uneme Clan has taken a new turn, with the Edo State Government’s official gazette publication validating his removal.
According to the gazette, E.S.I.N. 18, pages 223-224, dated 4th November 2022, Ikani’s removal was lawfully and validly carried out in strict compliance with the Edo State Chieftaincy Law and established governmental procedure.
The gazette publication, which is the final, authoritative, and conclusive instrument for the recognition or withdrawal of recognition of a traditional ruler under Edo State law, confirms that Ikani’s removal was duly approved by the Executive authority of Edo State and formally conveyed through a letter issued by the Secretary to the State Government.
In light of this development, the rightful claimant to the position of Clan Head of South-East Uneme Clan is Alhaji Adamu Momodu Muhammadu, who has been recognised as the Oliola by the Kingmakers

The clarification comes amid allegations that the deposed Oliola, Benjamin Ikani, still receives monthly stipends from the State government.
THE CONCLAVE reports that the government is now being called upon by the community to formally recognise Alhaji Muhammadu as the rightful Oliola and Clan Head.
It is worth noting that Ikani’s purported reinstatement after his removal in 2022 was effected solely through a letter issued by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, without publication in the Official Government Gazette, as mandatorily required by law and long-standing administrative practice.
This has reportedly raised questions about the legitimacy of Ikani’s claim to the position.
THE CONCLAVE reports that the situation highlights the importance of following due process and adhering to established laws and procedures in matters of traditional rulership.
The news medium further reports that as the rightful Oliola, Alhaji Muhammadu’s recognition would bring stability and legitimacy to the South-East Uneme Clan.
