Peter Obi, presumed presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Governor of Anambra State, has condemned the recent killing of a teacher and the rape and murder of an elderly woman, describing the incidents as “shattering” and symptomatic of deeper societal decay.

In a statement posted on his official X account, Obi said: “Some events shatter a society so deeply that words fall short. The brutal killing of a teacher and the rape and murder of an elderly woman are among such tragedies. These are not isolated incidents, but signs of a wider moral and social breakdown.

” How did we reach a point where teachers are targeted and killed, and the elderly—custodians of memory and wisdom—are subjected to such dehumanizing violence?

” This goes beyond a security failure. It is a collapse of our shared humanity. We have become desensitized, absorbing tragedy briefly before moving on, and allowing indifference to make the unacceptable seem normal.

“To the families affected, I share in your grief. But grief alone is not enough.

“We must demand accountability and urgent, systemic change. If atrocities of this nature no longer compel us to act, then we risk losing the very humanity that binds us as a nation.”

A statsment by Ibrahim Umar, Spokesperson, Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), confirmed the post.
