In celebration of Workers’ Day, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has commended the invaluable contributions of workers to the state’s economy during his tenure. Highlighting the remarkable growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) achieved over the past seven and a half years, Obaseki lauded the dedication and commitment of the workforce in advancing the state’s development agenda.

Governor Obaseki expressed his appreciation for the collaborative efforts with the state’s workers, citing a significant GDP increase of over 140 percent as evidence of their collective achievements. He remarked, “This is my last year in office, and I dare say that I have had the best of time working with workers in Edo State. The experience has been exhilarating.”

Emphasizing the government’s commitment to rewarding hard work, Obaseki announced a substantial raise in the minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000, representing an increase of over 75 percent. He underscored this adjustment as a testament to the administration’s dedication to valuing the contributions of the workforce.

Furthermore, Governor Obaseki outlined improvements in working conditions under his administration, including infrastructure upgrades, technological advancements, and enhanced incentives for workers. He noted Edo State’s pioneering transition to a fully digital government, citing the transformative impact of the e-governance platform on governance processes.

Acknowledging the importance of post-work stability, Obaseki highlighted the migration of workers to the Contributory Pension Scheme at both state and local government levels. He emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering merit-based systems, technological compliance, and promoting a healthy work-life balance.

Governor Obaseki concluded by inaugurating the Labour House, intended to serve as the Secretariat of the Labour Movement in Nigeria. He celebrated the enduring legacy of the state’s labor movement, recognizing its pivotal role in advancing workers’ rights and promoting social progress.

The governor’s remarks underscored the significance of Workers’ Day as a time to honor the contributions of the labor force and reaffirm the government’s commitment to supporting workers’ welfare and advancing economic growth.
