Bayelsa Queens secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rivers Angels in their NWFL Super Six opener at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.
Alaba Olabiyi’s clinical first-half strike and a crucial penalty save by goalkeeper Monle Omini secured the victory in a pulsating encounter.
The decisive moment came in the 34th minute when Mercy Omokwo’s precise through-ball found Olabiyi, who calmly slotted past Rivers Angels’ keeper Anderline Mgbechi.
The five-time NWFL champions controlled the opening half, their dynamic attacking play keeping Rivers Angels’ defence under constant pressure.
Rivers Angels responded with vigour after halftime, earning a penalty in the 50th minute after a foul in the box. Ifeoam Ikenokwalu’s spot-kick, however, was thwarted by Omini’s diving save, a moment that preserved Bayelsa Queens’ lead and shifted the momentum in their favor.
The second half unfolded as a tense battle, with both teams trading scoring opportunities.
Rivers Angels pressed for an equalizer, while Bayelsa Queens threatened on counterattacks, but Omini’s heroics and a steadfast defence ensured the lone goal held up.
The result gives Bayelsa Queens their second victory in three meetings with Rivers Angels this season, reinforcing their dominance in the matchup.
