The Osun State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has condemned the rumour doing the round that the state governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has concluded arrangements to demote and sack 1000 teachers in the state.

According to the State Chairman of the Union, Comrade Fatade Muritala Olatoke and Secretary, Comrade Adeojo Julius Akinlabi while denying the allegation in a statement issued and made available to newsmen in Osogbo the Osun State capital on Sunday, described the information as a blatant lie.

They said it was far from the truth.

The Osun NUT said there was never a time the state government was contemplating demoting 1000 teachers over lack of money or planning to pay half salary.

According to the allegation doing the round, “no fewer than 1000 workers, mostly teachers have been demoted from their current grades to their previous grade and there is a plan by the state government to return workers to modulated salary regime, otherwise known as half-salary plan, in order to manage the rising salary and overhead costs.”

The NUT leadership described Governor Adeleke as a teacher-friendly governor who was always pursuing complete welfare for teachers in the state.

It added that the issue of reducing the number of teachers in the state government’s school by the governor was not true.

“So, what we are doing now is to ensure government get more teachers to fill the vacancies in some of the school across the state, so there was never a time the Osun State government under the leadership of Senator Ademola Adeleke is thinking of retrenchment or demotion” the statement said.

The NUT Chairman and Secretary urged the governor to expedite action on his efforts to employ more teachers for the state government’s schools.

The NUT, however, enjoined teachers in the state to go about their normal official duties.

It urged them to disregard such false allegations, saying they were on top of the situation.
