The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has challenged professionals, media organizations, and critical stakeholders to defend press freedom, and harness the power of the media to protect the planet and create a sustainable future for all.
On the ocassion of this year’s Press Freedom Day, the NUJ said it believed that promoting ethical journalism as well as defending the rights and safety of journalists across the country were essential given the vital role journalists played as watchdogs of society, by holding power to account, exposing corruption, and amplifying the voices of the marginalized and vulnerable.
In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo to commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2024, the NUJ said this year’s theme; “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis”, underscores the crucial role of journalists in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainability.
The statement urged all stakeholders to always “defend the rights of journalists to work without fear of censorship, harassment, or violence”, noting that; “Press freedom is essential for democracy, accountability, and the protection of human rights.”
Addressing issues around promoting solutions and positive action, the NUJ said it was important for journalists to focus on highlighting “innovative solutions, best practices, and grassroots initiatives aimed at addressing the environmental crisis and promoting sustainability”
The Union further noted that the media must “inspire public engagement and empower communities to take meaningful action to protect the planet.”
The NUJ President’s statement also dwelled on the need to champion environmental reporting with priority on coverage of environmental issues and their impact on communities, ecosystems, and the planet, stressing that the media should not shy away from holding “governments, corporations, and individuals accountable for their actions and policies that contribute to environmental degradation.”
On fostering collaboration and solidarity, Comrade Isiguzo harped on building partnerships and networks to support environmental journalism as well as shared resources and expertise in amplifying the impact of reporting on environmental issues.
He further stressed that collaboration among journalists, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), academia, and government agencies is key in addressing complex environmental challenges in the country and beyond
The NUJ President noted that despite facing numerous challenges, including threats, intimidation, and attacks, journalists have continued to demonstrate courage, resilience, and professionalism in the pursuit of truth and justice.
He therefore charged all critical stakeholders to recommit themselves to supporting Journalists’ safety, security, and well-being, especially those reporting on sensitive or dangerous topics such as environmental issues.
Isiguzo also maintained that efforts must be geared towards providing training, resources, and legal support to journalists facing threats or attacks to promote free and independent media in the country.
