The Resource Assessment Panels from the National Universities Commission (NUC) has visited the Plateau University, Bokkos, to asses its readiness to commence admission in some newly- introduced courses in the university.
Mr John Agam, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Jos.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, represented by Mr. Kevin Parlong, said that the visit was based on the request made by the university to the commission for permission to commence some new academic programmes.
He assured that the commission would be fair and just in the discharge of their work towards ensuring quality teaching and learning in the institution.
Prof. Sada Ibrahim, who spoke on behalf of the resource persons, noted that their visit was to assess the scope and quality of facilities available for smooth take off of the new undergraduate and introduction of postgraduate programmes.
Earlier, Prof Benard Matur, the Vice Chancellor of the university, thanked the NUC for sending the panel for the assessment.
Matur promised to priotise the study of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and library studies, adding that he would soon equip its ICT Centre and library to meet up with the world’s standard.
”We will consolidate on the foundation laid by our predecessors which is encapsulated in the vision and hallmarks of learning, research and community service,” he said.
The vice chancellor disclosed that the first batch of seven panels of the assessment team which is made up of 19 resource persons had earlier visited the university.
He explained that 18 panels made up of 47 resource persons from NUC and various universities would visit to assess the existing facilities for the new programmes in the institution.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the newly-introduced courses include; Architecture, Building engineering, Law, Nursing, Community Health, Medical Laboratory science and Agricultural Sciences.
Also, it intends to commence post-graduate Studies in English language, History and international Studies, Theatre Arts, Accounting, Management, Economics, Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics and Psychology.
Others include; Sociology, Mass Communication, Political Science, Public Administration, International Relations and Strategic Studies, Computer Science, Mathematics, Geography, among others.
NAN also reports that the exercise which commenced on April 11 would end by April 18. (NAN)
