The National Universities Commission (NUC) has alerted Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian universities to a human trafficking network recently uncovered by the Indonesian police.

The network, based in Germany, has been operating under the guise of providing internships to students.

The NUC received a circular from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) on May 13, 2024, referenced 736/S.5/V/153.

In a statement signed by Mr. John Mairafi Ahmadu Director, Directorate of the Executive Secretary’s Office on behalf of the Executive Secretary, the commission has urged university heads to publicise the information widely in their institutions.

The NUC emphasised: “You are to give the circular wide publicity in your respective institutions, for information and guidance, as appropriate.”

This measure, it explained, aimed to protect students from falling prey to this dangerous scheme.

The Executive Secretary of the NUC reassured university leaders of his commitment, stating, “As always, please accept the assurances of the Executive Secretary’s highest regards.”

The commission said its timely intervention underscored the importance of vigilance in safeguarding students against such threats. [SR]
