The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has identified “systemic neglect and technical failures” as the primary causes of the August 26, 2025, Abuja-Kaduna train derailment near Asham Station.

Preliminary findings point to poor maintenance practices and a defective track switch as key contributors to the incident.

The NSIB’s initial report highlights several issues, including inadequate repairs to damaged track sleepers and a non-functional automatic switch mechanism.

The bureau also flagged critical shortcomings in staff training and resource availability, noting that personnel had only undergone basic training without refresher programs.
