In compliance with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to fortify Nigeria’s cyber space and shield its citizens from cybercrimes, the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has recently apprehended two individuals involved in criminal conspiracy, identity theft, and romance scams.

The authorities are intensifying efforts to apprehend others implicated in similar activities.

Confirming these developments, the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that the arrested suspects, identified as Jerry Okoye and Ifeanyi Nwosu, both residents of Panasonic Estate in Idu, Abuja, have admitted to their involvement in computer-related fraudulent activities associated with romance scams and identity theft. Substantial evidence extracted from their electronic devices has illuminated the extent of their criminal enterprises.

Jerry Okoye, a former student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), asserted his involvement in the music industry since 2016 and claimed to operate a public relations company.

However, he confessed to engaging in fraudulent activities dating back to 2014, with a primary focus on Facebook.

The investigation further unveiled compelling evidence linking him to fraud and romance scams that have persisted up to the present day.

Likewise, Ifeanyi Nwosu, closely associated with Jerry Okoye, was apprehended alongside the primary suspect.

Nwosu initially stated his visit to Okoye’s residence was for music recording purposes.

However, he acknowledged a unique relationship with a 69-year-old white woman known as Winnie, whom he identified as both a fan and a friend.

This connection, it appears, transcended casual friendship, as evidence of a series of financial transactions between Nwosu and the elderly woman came to light.

Adejobi said the Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of citizens by rigorously combating criminal activities such as identity theft, romance scams, sextortion, and other cyber-related offenses.

The public is strongly urged to exercise vigilance and caution when interacting with individuals online, especially those they have not met in person.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi called upon Nigerians and residents to actively cooperate with the Force in safeguarding the cyber space and protecting their communities from these threats.

He emphasized that safeguarding Nigeria’s cyber space is a collective responsibility that must not be underestimated.

The Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reiterated his commitment to fortifying Nigeria’s cyber space, ensuring its safety, and bringing cybercriminals to justice.

The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in its mission to create a safer online environment for all citizens.
