In a significant blow to banditry in northern Nigeria, notorious bandit commander Kachalla Tukur Sharme and several other bandits have been killed in violent internal clashes.
Confirming the report, overseeing Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan said the fratricidal battle, which took place over the weekend, left two bandits from a rival group dead and several others severely injured.
Aruwan said the clashes, which occurred around the ‘Hambakko’ area within the Rijana and Kaso Forests, spanning Kachia, Chikun, and Kajuru local government areas of Kaduna State, also enabled the escape of some kidnapped victims.
He said that according to intelligence reports, five bandits sustained life-threatening injuries and were believed to be hiding in the area, seeking medical aid.
Local residents have been warned to avoid assisting anyone with gunshot wounds and to immediately report any suspicious activity to the security forces.
Kachalla Sharme, infamous for his role in widespread killings, kidnappings, and cattle rustling, had long evaded capture.
He was a leading figure behind a series of violent attacks across Kaduna State and neighbouring states such as Katsina and Niger.
His most notorious act was the kidnapping of 121 students from Bethel Baptist High School in Kujama, Kaduna, in July 2021.
Despite previous near-captures by security forces, Sharme met his demise at the hands of a rival gang in a fierce gunfight.
Two security personnel lost their lives while repelling the bandits during the clash.
Residents of the affected areas, including Rijana, Kaso, and Kajuru, have been urged to report any suspicious activity to the Kaduna State Security Operations Room using the designated hotlines, with assurances that any information provided will be handled confidentially.
