The Northern Nigeria Minorities Group (NNMG) has condemned former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir el-Rufai for alleging that President Bola Tinubu intends to extend his tenure beyond the constitutionally guaranteed eight years.

The group described el-Rufai’s claims as “reckless,” “malicious,” and “bitter.”

In a statement signed by Chief Jacob Edi, Kakaki Bassa-Nge, Convener of the NNMG, the group attributed el-Rufai’s actions to frustration and a desire for relevance.

They cited his past actions and behaviour, which they said showed a pattern of betrayal and blackmail.

The NNMG emphasised that Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution was clear on presidential tenure and that no amount of propaganda could alter this reality.

They called on el-Rufai to retract his statements and apologise to Nigerians for attempting to poison the political atmosphere.

The group also urged security agencies to monitor individuals like el-Rufai, whose statements could spark unnecessary tension.

They vowed to resist any attempts to derail Nigeria’s democracy through tenure elongation or manipulation.

The group’s key demands are that:

● el-Rufai should retract his lies and apologize to Nigerians.

●Nigerians should treat his words with contempt.

● Security agencies should monitor El-Rufai’s activities to prevent unnecessary tension
