The Niger State Imam Forum, which comprises Chief Imams of Friday Mosques in the state and Islamic Organizations, has affirmed its decision to proceed with the wedding of 100 orphans in Mariga Local Government Area.

The move is in spite of the withdrawal of support by the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly.

The Forum said that the wedding did not violate the Nigerian constitution or teachings of Islam.

Dr Umar Farouk, the Director General of Niger State Religious Affairs, declared that the wedding, scheduled for May 24, 2024, would proceed as planned.

He also issued a 7-day ultimatum to the Minister of Women Affairs to withdraw her court case and petition against the Speaker of the Niger Assembly, warning of legal action if she fails to comply.

Furthermore, the Forum demanded an apology from the Minister for alleged blackmail, and urged President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to dismiss her for alleged incompetence and attempting to foment religious disharmony in Nigeria.

Dr. Farouk also called upon philanthropists, affluent individuals, and politicians to conduct similar marriages as a means to cleanse society, following the Speaker’s example.

He stressed that the intending brides, aged between 18 and 25, including widows, had given their consent, and all necessary procedures had been observed.
