NIS warns against fake migration schemes and human trafficking networks

The Nigeria Immigration Service has raised concern over a rise in fraudulent migration syndicates and irregular cross-border networks targeting Nigerians with false overseas opportunities.

In a statement on Monday, NIS Public Relations Officer DCI Akinsola Akinlabi said criminal groups are luring vulnerable citizens, particularly young women and girls, with promises of employment, education, and sponsorship. Many victims, he said, end up in forced labour, human trafficking, and other forms of exploitation.

The Service warned that leaving Nigeria without valid passports, visas, and other required documents is illegal and dangerous. It noted that genuine migration processes do not bypass official immigration procedures or authorised border posts.

According to the NIS, syndicates now use social media and informal recruitment channels to promote fake scholarships, jobs, and travel assistance. The public was urged to verify travel and recruitment offers through government channels and to avoid unsolicited sponsorships or deals from unverified individuals.

NIS also called on parents, guardians, and community leaders to educate young people on the risks of trafficking and irregular migration, and asked Nigerians to report suspicious activities to the nearest immigration office or security agency.

The agency said it remains committed to protecting citizens from exploitation and strengthening border security. Reports and inquiries can be made through its verified social media accounts and contact centre lines.
