The Nigerian Meteorological Agency is to begin a test run of providing a 72-hour marine meteorological forecasting for NIMASA.
This was disclosed by the DG NiMet, Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu during an interactive session on the capacity and operations of the Numerical Weather Prediction, NWP, organised by the NWP unit of NiMet on Wednesday.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Matazu disclosed that NiMet had been pursuing this for about 13 years before this breakthrough.
“Now on a daily basis we will be giving them (NIMASA) 72 hours forecast, to which they air on 8 channels at no cost to NiMet,” he said.
Describing this as a preliminary service, Prof. Matazu also disclosed that an MoU would be signed on or before January, and expressed optimism that marine met services would soon be comparable to what is obtained in aero met services.
On the interactive session with the NWP, the DG expressed happiness at the initiative and observed that the interaction would not only help other departments become acquainted with what the NWP unit is doing but would also help NiMet immensely with its effort to provide tailor-made products/user services.
The event included a power point presentation by DGM (NWP), Dr Eniola Olaniyan and an interactive session.
