The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has partnered with telecommunications giant MTN and advanced weather intelligence firm Tomorrow.io to develop a Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS) system.

The agreement, formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on Friday, January 24, 2025, at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja, aims to deliver localized, actionable weather advisories to Nigerian farmers via SMS.

The initiative aligns with the United Nations’ goal of establishing early warning systems for all and is designed to bolster Nigeria’s climate resilience, particularly in the agricultural sector.

Speaking at the signing, NiMet Director General, Professor Charles Anosike, highlighted the project’s role in improving agricultural productivity and resilience.

“This initiative supports the food security agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government,” he said.

Anosike also emphasized the strategic collaboration with MTN and Tomorrow.io, describing it as a groundbreaking effort to integrate private sector expertise into climate science.

MTN CEO Karl Toriola expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential impact on agriculture, disaster management, and the broader economy.

“We are proud to support this transformative initiative,” he said.

Dr. Henry Onyemachi, Managing Director of Tomorrow.io, lauded NiMet’s leadership in driving the partnership.

“This project is directly tied to addressing food security challenges in Nigeria,” Onyemachi remarked.

Under the agreement, the three partners will collaborate on the development, testing, and deployment of the DCAS platform, which will provide farmers with real-time weather advisories via SMS, enhancing agricultural planning and productivity nationwide.
