NiMet forecasts 3-day dust haze, thunderstorms across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast haziness and thunderstorms across the country from Sunday to Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

NiMet made this known via its weather outlook issued on Saturday.

The agency predicted moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility between two kilometres and five kilometres in the northern region on Sunday.

NiMet anticipated localised visibility of less than or equal to 1,000 metres in parts of Katsina, Kano, and Jigawa States on Sunday.

The agency also anticipated moderate dust haze in the North-Central region on Sunday.

It predicted sunny skies with a few patches of cloud in the southern region, with slim prospects of afternoon or evening thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall in parts of Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.

According to NiMet, moderate dust haze is expected in the northern and North-Central regions on Monday.

It forecast sunny skies with few patches of cloud in the southern region, with slim chances of isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall in Ondo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, and Edo States later in the day.

The agency predicted slight dust haze in the northern region on Tuesday.

NiMet anticipated moderate dust haze in the North-Central region on Tuesday.

The agency predicted sunny skies with few patches of cloud in the southern region, with slim chances of isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall in Lagos, Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa States later in the day.

NiMet urged the public to take necessary precautions, saying dust particles would remain in suspension.

NiMet also enjoined people with asthma and other respiratory conditions to be cautious under the prevailing weather conditions.

It further advised motorists to drive with caution during rainfall, just as it urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from the agency for effective operational planning.
