In a determined effort to combat illegal oil refining activities, the Nigerian Navy, through the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DELTA, executed “Operation DELTA SANITY” on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, leading to the discovery and deactivation of two significant illegal refining sites in the Warri-South region.
According to military sources, the first site was located in Opumami, where the patrol team discovered a storage tank and a dugout pit containing large quantities of stolen crude oil.
This site was promptly deactivated, preventing further illicit activities and environmental damage.
Continuing their operation, the team identified and dismantled a second illegal refining site in the Igbekebo community.
This site was equipped with three wooden boats and four storage tanks, all containing stolen crude oil and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
The quantity of the stolen crude oil and AGO was unspecified, but the successful deactivation of this site marks a significant blow to the operations of oil thieves in the region.
The Nigerian Navy’s proactive approach in identifying and dismantling these illegal refining sites underscores its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s oil resources and protecting the environment from the adverse effects of illegal oil refining activities.
The operation highlights the importance of continuous surveillance and enforcement efforts in curbing oil theft and related crimes in the Niger Delta region.
Further investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for these illegal activities and to prevent future occurrences.
The Nigerian Navy has reiterated its resolve to maintain the momentum of such operations to ensure the security and integrity of the nation’s oil industry.
