In a significant enhancement of the Nigerian Navy’s (NN) operational capabilities, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) handed over three state-of-the-art Agusta Westland (AW109) Trekker helicopters to the Navy at a brief yet symbolic ceremony held at Caverton Helicopters Limited (CHL) hangar facilities in Ikeja, Lagos.
The AW109 Trekker models, renowned for their agility and endurance, will bolster the Navy’s mission capabilities in surveillance, search and rescue, medevac, and other critical operations.
The handover ceremony saw key dignitaries in attendance, underscoring the importance of this acquisition for national defense.
The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, was present to officially receive the helicopters on behalf of the Navy.
Joining him were senior officials including MOD Permanent Secretary Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, MOD Director of Navy Affairs Dr. Raji Isiaka Ogunshola, Caverton Group President Chief Remi Makanjuola, and Caverton Group Managing Director, retired Group Captain Bello.
The AW109 helicopters handed over are configured for VIP transport with luxury leather interiors, a noise attenuation system, and a landing skid design, which increases their load capacity over wheeled models.
With the addition of auxiliary fuel tanks, each helicopter has an extended flight endurance of up to 3 hours and 40 minutes, providing an enhanced operational range suitable for long-range transport and reconnaissance missions.
The helicopters can also be retrofitted with specialized mission equipment, further expanding their flexibility for various naval tasks.
Vice Admiral Ogalla, speaking at the ceremony, expressed his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his ongoing commitment to the Armed Forces, particularly the Navy.
He also extended his appreciation to the Minister of Defence and the Minister of State for Defence for their role in facilitating the acquisition of these helicopters, highlighting the added strength they bring to Nigeria’s maritime security.
He stated that the helicopters are a critical resource in addressing the Navy’s diverse operational needs, such as aerial reconnaissance, search and rescue, air insertion, and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) operations.
The acquisition aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to enhance the capabilities of its military forces in safeguarding national waters, supporting regional stability, and responding effectively to emerging security challenges. The new helicopters are expected to integrate seamlessly into the Navy’s operational fleet, contributing to both immediate and strategic defense objectives.
President Bola Tinubu’s administration has pledged to support advancements in defense infrastructure and technology, reflecting a commitment to a well-equipped and responsive military.
These new AW109 helicopters, with their advanced design and extended range, represent a significant upgrade in Nigeria’s aerial defense resources and underscore the country’s dedication to maintaining a robust defense posture across air, land, and sea.
