In a decisive move to curb the escalating menace of oil theft and illegal refining in the Niger Delta region, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DELTA carried out a series of operations under the code name “Operation DELTA SANITY” on Wednesday, 23 October 2024.

The coordinated efforts resulted in the discovery and destruction of multiple illegal refining sites in the Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.

The first raid, conducted in the Obodo Omani community, led to the dismantling of two major illegal refining sites.

Navy personnel uncovered two refining ovens, two storage tanks, several sacks containing illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and 13 dugout pits filled with a yet-to-be-determined quantity of stolen crude oil.

These makeshift facilities were part of a larger network that had been siphoning crude oil and processing it into refined products for illicit sale, further undermining Nigeria’s oil revenue.

In a separate operation on Bennett Island, within the same local government area, NNS DELTA personnel discovered another illegal refining site. The facility, equipped with two refining ovens, three storage tanks, and sacks of illegally refined AGO, was promptly dismantled.

The destruction of these facilities is a crucial part of the Nigerian Navy’s ongoing campaign to disrupt the network of illegal refineries that have been a major contributor to environmental pollution and loss of government revenue in the Niger Delta.

Speaking on the success of the operations, naval authorities reiterated their commitment to sustaining the momentum in the fight against oil theft and illegal refining, noting that these activities not only affect the nation’s economy but also pose significant environmental hazards.

The Nigerian Navy’s intensified efforts are aimed at restoring sanity and securing the region from the economic and ecological damage caused by these illegal operations.

The Warri South-West area, like many parts of the Niger Delta, has been a hotbed of illegal refining activities, with numerous criminal syndicates setting up rudimentary facilities to process stolen crude oil.

These operations have led to severe environmental degradation, particularly through oil spills and pollution of water bodies, devastating local communities.

The Navy’s operations are part of a broader strategy involving collaboration with other security agencies and local authorities to ensure that oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and illegal refining are eradicated.

The latest actions by NNS DELTA mark another critical step towards achieving greater security and economic stability in the region.

Authorities have called on residents to cooperate with security forces by providing information on suspected illegal activities, as the government seeks to protect the region’s resources and promote sustainable development in the oil-rich Niger Delta.
