Eighteen lecturers from Nigerian higher institutions have been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) to transform four prototype projects into commercially viable products.

These grants are part of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund’s (TETFund’s) Research for Impact Initiative (R4I).

The lecturers, organized into four groups, developed prototypes at Innov8 Hub, an innovation center in Abuja.

Their projects include: Technology to Mitigate the Effect of Drought in Northern Nigeria, Automated Garri Frying Technology (Jollyfryer), Biosensor Device for Water Purification Using Solar Energy and AirVolt: Affordable Electricity with Vertical Axis Wind Turbines
SGCI, a multi-funded initiative, strengthens the capacities of 17 Science Granting Councils in sub-Saharan Africa, contributing significantly to national research and innovation ecosystems.

Speaking at the SGCI launch event in Abuja, Innov8 Hub’s Deputy General Manager, Mr. Deji Ige, highlighted the transformative impact of the R4I initiative and the TETFund Alliance for Innovative Research (TETFAIR).

He praised TETFund for fostering a paradigm shift in Nigerian academia, where research now focuses on solutions, innovation, and impact rather than solely on publication and promotion.

Dr. Saliba Bakare, TETFund’s Director of Research and Development, noted that the $250,000 grant will support four Nigerian research teams in advancing their innovations.

These initiatives include enhancements in garri processing and renewable energy solutions.

The funding aims to bridge the gap between research and practical application, fostering innovations that can be commercialized.

“The essence is to help them transform their research findings into commercializable goods and services in this country,” Dr. Bakare explained.

The grant focuses on developing market-ready prototypes and pitching these products to industries to ensure tangible economic benefits.

This initiative marks a significant step towards national development, showcasing Nigerian academics’ ability to translate their ideas into viable, impactful products.
