Nigerian Government and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) have disagreed on the accurate statistics of the nation’s unemployment rate.
The NBS had, in a report released in March, said Nigeria’s unemployment rate jumped from 27.1% it was in the second quarter of 2020 to 33.3 percent in the fourth quarter of the same year.
On Thursday, the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige said; “There has been a little confusion there as to the accuracy of data generated by the NBS.
“The World Bank says the NBS methodology doesn’t conform with the global standard, especially the ILO format of arriving at such Employment Index.”
However, on Friday, the NBS opposed Ngige’s claim, insisting that its methodology for measuring the rate of unemployment in the country conforms with global standards.
“The World Bank has denied making any such statement and rather together with the economic advisory committee affirmed its confidence, commendation, support and close working relationship with @nigerianstat. The World Bank can be contacted if in doubt,” NBS responded to Ngige via Twitter.
