The Nigerian Army has categorically refuted recent media reports alleging that insurgents have taken control of a military training area in Kontagora, Niger State.
Responding to statements made by Honourable Abdullahi Isah, representing Kontagora II in the Niger State House of Assembly, the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, described these claims as baseless, affirming that no credible threat exists in the region.
According to Major General Nwachukwu, the reports alleged a bandit invasion in the military zone and the displacement of residents from 23 communities in Kontagora and Mariga.
However, an extensive investigation by the Army’s intelligence unit found no evidence of hostile activity.
Instead, the individuals observed in the area were herders seeking grazing land, with no signs of malicious intent or aggressive behavioir.
While acknowledging the concerns expressed by local communities and their representatives, the Army called on all stakeholders to verify sensitive information through official channels.
The statement underscored that such misinformation had the potential to incite unnecessary fear, misdirect critical resources, and detract from genuine security priorities.
Major General Nwachukwu reassured the public of the security and fortification of all military training areas, noting the Army’s readiness to respond decisively to any threat.
He emphasized the Army’s commitment to safeguarding Nigerian citizens and fostering peace in host communities.
