The Nigerian Army is in mourning following the death of Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Gabriel Okoye, Commanding Officer of 20 Model Battalion.
Lt. Col. Okoye died on June 13, 2026 in what the Army described as a brief illness.

While social media accounts claimed the officer was killed in a bandit attack, the Army dismissed the reports in a statement issued Thursday, June 18, 2026 by Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad.
“Lt. Col. Okoye passed away on June 13, 2026, after (in) a brief illness, contrary to claims that his death resulted from a bandit attack or any operational incident,” the statement said.

Initial reported of his death on June 14 via a statement from 6 Brigade Nigerian Army signed by Lt. Umar Muhammad, Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations.
The Headquarters, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army expressed regret over the loss and conveyed condolences to the family, personnel of 20 Model Battalion, friends and associates.
“Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Gabriel Okoye served the Nigerian Army and the nation with unwavering dedication, professionalism, and courage. Throughout his distinguished military career, he demonstrated exemplary leadership and commitment to duty, making significant contributions to the operational effectiveness of 20 Model Battalion and the attainment of the Brigade’s security objectives,” the statement read.
Commander 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, said Okoye’s service, devotion to his troops and commitment to Nigeria’s sovereignty would remain a source of inspiration.
“His death is a great loss not only to his family and colleagues but also to the Nigerian Army,” the Brigade added.

6 Brigade said it remains committed to safeguarding lives and property, maintaining peace and security, and defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
