The Nigerian Army has responded to a viral video circulating on social media that depicts a staged capture of a Nigerian Army Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) by Turji Bello, a known leader among the infamous terrorists in the North West region of Nigeria.
The army categorically dismissed the video as baseless and fabricated.
According to Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, there was no factual incident involving the capture of any of their APCs within the operational theatre in the North West.
He pointed out that the video had been deceptively manipulated and that the Nigerian Army vehicles, including APCs, were marked with “NA” on their number plates, a detail conspicuously absent on the APC shown in the video.
Nwachukwu clarified that the events depicted in the video did not transpire at any point within Nigeria; rather, the available data suggested that the footage originated from an event that occurred in Burkina Faso in 2021.
He highlighted that the same video was posted on Facebook on November 9, 2021, with the URL “https://web.facebook.com/watch/?v=1544154362616622.”
The Director of Army Public Relations emphasized the Nigerian Army’s unwavering vigilance and professionalism in safeguarding its armoured vehicles to prevent compromise by criminal elements.
He urged the public to exercise caution and discernment regarding misinformation and propaganda spread by insurgents, whose aim is to instil fear and disrupt the nation’s peace and security.
Nwachukwu reiterated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to safeguarding the life and property of citizens, working diligently to ensure peace and stability throughout the country.
He reassured that the army would continue to provide accurate and reliable updates on its operations and activities through official channels.
