Nigerian Army captures Boko Haram commanders, arrests logistics suppliers

In a significant victory against insurgency, the Nigerian Army has captured suspected Boko Haram commanders, arrested logistics suppliers, and rescued several kidnap victims in a series of successful operations.

The actions also led to the surrender of numerous terrorists and their families, highlighting the military’s intensified efforts to combat terrorism and crime across the country.

On August 4, 2024, acting on credible intelligence, troops apprehended two Boko Haram commanders, Bana Yamode and Babagana Usman, who had infiltrated the Damasak Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Mobbar Local Government Area, Borno State.

The suspects, known for leading attacks on troops in the region, claimed they were visiting family members. In the same operation, two suspected logistics suppliers for the terrorist group, Mallam Mustapha Ismaila (49) and Abdulmudalabi Haruna (30), were also arrested.

Additionally, two minors were rescued during the operation.

In a parallel effort, 50 Boko Haram suspects, along with their families, surrendered to the Nigerian Army in Bama, Gwoza, and Dikwa Local Government Areas.

This mass surrender follows increased military pressure in these regions.

Further successes were recorded in Yobe State, where troops arrested three Boko Haram collaborators at Gubio Market.

The suspects confessed to participating in kidnapping and armed robbery. Items seized included two motorcycles and multiple mobile phones.

In Kogi State, a notorious kidnapping kingpin, Mohammed Bello, was arrested in Egbe Community, Yagba Local Government Area. Bello, a member of a seven-man kidnapping syndicate, had been on the wanted list of security agencies.

In a related operation, troops rescued the former Chairman of Kabba Local Government Area from kidnappers in Egbe Forest, apprehending one suspect.

In Ebonyi State, troops thwarted a kidnapping attempt in Ezza-Umuhuali Village, Ishielu Local Government Area. They arrested a suspect carrying an ATM card, 48 international passports, and other items.

Meanwhile, in Jigawa State, nine individuals were arrested for looting a shop in Kazaure town. Recovered items included 255 bags of fertilizer, three bags of rice, a solar panel, and five motorcycles.

In Plateau State, troops detained five suspected cultists and recovered a locally made pistol and a cartridge. They also apprehended a suspect involved in motorcycle theft at Kara Market in Jos North Local Government Area.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, commended the troops for their dedication to combating terrorism, insurgency, and other crimes. He praised the capture of key Boko Haram figures, the arrest of logistics suppliers, the rescue of kidnap victims, and the recovery of looted items. He emphasized the Nigerian Army’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the nation and urged the public to continue providing credible information to aid security operations.
