Nigeria win 16 medals at African Cycling Championships

Nigeria secured a total of 16 medals at the 2026 Confederation of African Cycling Para-Track and Track African Championships held in Abuja.

The championship, which took place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome, featured top cyclists from across Africa, including competitors from Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Algeria and host nation Nigeria.

After two days of intense competition, Team Nigeria topped the medals table with nine gold, five silver and two bronze medals, finishing ahead of some of the continent’s established cycling nations.

Egypt placed second with 14 medals, while Kenya occupied third position with nine medals. South Africa and Algeria completed the top five on the standings.

Nigeria’s impressive outing drew cheers from home supporters at the velodrome as the riders delivered strong performances in speed, endurance and technical races throughout the championship.

The event also received commendation for the quality of facilities at the Abuja velodrome, which provided a suitable venue for continental-level competition.

Nigeria previously hosted the championships in 2021 and 2023, further strengthening the country’s growing reputation as a major hub for cycling events in Africa.

More than 100 cyclists from eight African countries participated in this year’s competition, battling for medals, continental ranking points and honours.
