In a significant move to protect Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has constituted a high-level Presidential Committee to address the recent events at the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) in Benin City.
The committee, chaired by the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barr. Hannatu Musa Musawa, brings together stakeholders from various fields to develop a comprehensive framework for permanent resolution.
The presidential intervention demonstrates the administration’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s cultural patrimony through dialogue, mutual respect, and strict adherence to constitutional provisions.
The committee’s mandate includes extensive consultation, rigorous fact-finding, and the formulation of actionable recommendations that balance Nigeria’s sovereign cultural interests with international partnerships and diplomatic considerations.
The committee comprises representatives from various stakeholders, including government agencies, cultural institutions, diplomatic missions, traditional leaders, and senators.
This diverse composition reflects the president’s recognition of the complex historical, cultural, and diplomatic dimensions of the issue.
The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barr. Hannatu Musa Musawa, emphasised the importance of preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage, stating that “cultural institutions are pillars of our national identity and must be protected through collaborative approaches that respect both traditional custodianship and modern institutional structures.”
The federal government urged all stakeholders to maintain peace and cooperate fully with the Presidential Committee as it pursued its vital mandate.
The committee’s findings and recommendations will be submitted directly to President Tinubu, facilitating swift implementation of sustainable solutions that uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s cultural ecosystem.
